Brad Hennessie, MHA, MBA is the CEO and Co-Founder of NextStep Robotics, a University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) spinout company focusing on rehabilitation robotics technologies that have been clinically proven. Brad started his career path as a Towson University Intern at the Maryland Exercise and Robotics Center of excellence at the Baltimore VA. After a few years of coordinating research based on exercise and technology to improve stroke rehabilitation he received his MS in Health Care Administration and his MBA from UMUC. Soon after completing his MBA he realized the quickest path for rehab technologies to make their way into clinical hands was through industry. Brad left his position as Lead Clinical Research Specialist in the Department of Neurology at UMB in 2017 to found NextStep Robotics and has since successfully raised ~$1.7M towards translating their technology to a clinic ready physical therapy tool.
More recently, NextStep has been awarded a ~$1M contract from NIH NINDS to finalize the design of the device and through a Fast Track grant process will have the opportunity to extend that contract for an additional $4.5M to conduct a 3 year clinical trial. His vision for NextStep is to become the supplier of the next generation of physical therapy tools by bringing new evidence based rehab technologies to market and leveraging partnerships with those already present. Brad has an interest in raising the awareness of the Maryland opportunity as a biotech hotspot to help encourage technology transfer from Maryland’s well-funded federal and academic research labs.
