Makerspaces as a Tool for Economic Development

Located in Baltimore, Open Works is one of the largest and most diverse makerspaces in the United States with a mission to make tools, technology, and the knowledge to use them accessible to all. Over the last three years, Open Works has facilitated the creation of over 50 small businesses and created over 100 jobs through member companies and its own staff. Executive Director Will Holman will explore the business plan, operating model, facility design, and ongoing impact of Open Works in his talk.

We also are publishing a groundbreaking report early next month entitled ‘Turning Makerspaces into Greater Places.’ Conducted by the Coppin State University College of Business, it is the first economic impact analysis of a makerspace ever conducted in the U.S., and presents a lot of great data on top of the job and business creation numbers mentioned above. The report will soon be publicly available as a free PDF download.
